Casey Adam Matthews, 27, of Bena began his spiritual journey on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.  Casey was born in Bemidji, MN, on September 6, 1989, to Gerald Edward Humphrey and Joy Marie Matthews.

Casey was and always has been a family-oriented young man. He enjoyed spending time with family, especially his nieces and nephews. He cherished play time in the park, and walks with Baby Nick and Nick’aya, and his “faithful furry friend” Tammy.  He was very passionate in anything he chose to do. He also loved to take pointless road trips, shop, and go to the casino. He liked to eat at various restaurants, always looking for the best strawberry shortcake. Casey graduated Cass Lake-Bena High School in 2011 and attended Leech Lake Tribal College for one year. His smiling face will be missed by all who knew him.

Welcoming Casey home are his grandparents.

He leaves behind his father; Gerald Edward Stangel-Humphrey, his mother; Joy Marie Matthews, his grandfather; Frank Humphrey, his brothers; Thomas Matthews, Jonathan Magnuson, Roland Orth, his sister; Noma Stangel (Nicholas Budreau), nieces and nephews; Nicholas Budreau, Jr., Nick’aya Budreau, Thomas Matthews, Precious Matthews , Anayah Matthews, Avery Matthews, Kianna Orth and special friend; Trevor Kingbird, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and many other relatives.

The wake for Casey will begin at 5:00 p.m., Monday, May 22nd and continue until his 1:00 p.m. traditional services on Wednesday, May 24rd all being held at the Bena Community Center in Bena, MN.  Allen Hardy will be his Spiritual Leader. Pallbearers for Casey will be Nicholas Budreau Sr., Trevor Kingbird, Roland Orth, Ricky Hinrichs, Tony Stangel, and Tony Stangel, Jr.  Honorary pallbearers will be Nicholas Budreau Jr., Nick’aya Budreau, Thomas Matthews, Precious Matthews, Anayah Matthews, and Avery Matthews.
