Judy, sorry to hear of your mom's passing. We remember her well during those old Miss Minn days -- lovely lady.
Also, can you send us your email and/or phone number. It would be fun to catch up.

Hugs from Bill & Duffy

My family spent a dozen years renting the cabin from Ralph and Jewell. We had such wonderful times there. Ralph and Jewell spoiled us to consider any other place. While the guys fish, Jewell took me blueberry picking; we shared book titles; and had such good talks. We now have a place on Leech Lake and I'm sure partly because of the love for it that the
Mendenhalls shared with us.
My sympathy to her family. You were blessed to have her. Nina Schultz

Mrs Mendenhall was my choir and Madrigal’s director at Portland Junior High. She had a way of making her students feel special. I remember how she encouraged her students to try new things even when we thought we couldn’t do it. I remember running into her and Ralph at the Star Cafe in Pierz when we were heading to the lake. She always would be so happy to see us and she would never forget to give me a big hug. I’ll always have fond memories of her.

Many summers ago, our family was the last to rent Ralph and Jewell's cabin as they sold it the week we were there. Ralph and Jewell were most wonderful to us as we enjoyed our time there! Ralph insisted on cleaning all of our fish we caught and Jewell fried them up for a delicious dinner that evening. They shared stories and love with our family throughout the week, inviting our children into their home for games, music and dress-up opportunities with beautiful old clothes. It was one of the best of times for us then. We have wonderful memories of that week thanks to the kindness and love they shared with us. May changes to our family since that time years ago yet my children, now 26 and 32, always remember that week as one of the best ever for them. The world became a better place because of Ralph and Jewell. May their spirits rest in peace forever, together.

My sincere sympathies to Ms Mendenhall's family. She made a difference in my life so very long ago, being the music teacher at Portland Jr. High School. She loved all of her students and made us all feel so very special. She was certainly loved. Julie (Boeser) O'Hara

So sorry to learn about Jewell. I'm sure there will a spot in the Heavenly choir for her. It was my privilege to spend many years teaching with Jewell at Portland Jr High in Bloomington. The impact she had on the students at Portland was immense. I have always included her among the many brilliant stars that made IISD 271 the outstanding district that it was at that time.

My heartfelt condolences to her family. I remember Mrs. Mendenhall as a wonderful choir director. Her passion for music and the joy she received was apparent and rubbed off on her students. She was warm, caring and passionate and am so glad she shared that passion with the choir, leaving a lasting impact for many.

The Mendenhalls lived across the street from my family for many years. I took piano lessons from Jewel and clarinet from Ralph. I fondly remember the wonderful birthday parties, open door policy, and parades for the entire neighborhood. Jewel and family were part of what made my childhood wonderful. Judy was always a special friend of mine.
