Leona “Onie” Mae Lyons, 42 years young, passed away at her home after a courageous battle with cancer on July 2, 2018. Onie was born on February 21, 1976 in Cass Lake Minnesota to Tamara (Troxel) and Vernon Lyons.
Onie was born at the Cass Lake IHS Hospital and lived all her young life in the Laporte area. She attended school in Laporte and Walker. In high school, Onie played and was very good at basketball and volleyball. As a little girl, Onie developed a love for unicorns that stuck with her throughout her life. Onie enjoyed deer hunting and stopping at the “Lucky Moose” on her way home from work. She was a huge fan of the Minnesota Vikings, the ice races at Garfield Lake and live concerts. Onie was very close with her family and loved spending as much time with them as she could. She was also very close with her friends and enjoyed celebrating life with them.
Family that Onie is reunited with are her grandparents; Leona O. Lyons, Aubrey A. Lyons, Alberta Troxel and Elmer Troxel, and two aunts; Lavon “Bonnie” Kolkin and Dorothy Johnson.
Onie is survived by her parents; Tammy and Vern Lyons, sister; Billie Jo Simonson, brother; Nathan Lyons, nephew; Logan Simonson, her special friend; Joel Damar and his children Hayley and Gavin.
A celebration of Onie’s life will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 9th, 2018 at the Lucky Moose in Walker, MN. Her honorary pallbearers are Michael Lyons, Gus Forseman, Mike Nelson, Reid Watson and Jamey Damar. Onie’s special friends are Dawn Anderson, Kelli Nelson, Terri Olson, Grace Lundquist, Tony and Sandy Fiacchino and Brian and Lori Baglein. A private family inurnment will be in the Lakeport Cemetery at Laporte, MN at a later date.
