Marian Roy Obituary

Marian C. Roy, age 82, of Red Lake, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, August 28th, 2019 at home, surrounded by her family.  She was born on October 23rd, 1936 in Red Lake, MN to Joseph and Mary (Roberts) Cobenais.

Marian attended the St. Mary’s Mission school graduating from the 8th grade in 1950.  She went on to attend the Red Lake high school graduating with the class of 1954.  Married William F. Roy in December 1958. Marian and William were part of the Indian relocation act of 1956 and relocated to Cleveland, Ohio for a short time in the late 1950’s but returned to Red Lake where they raised their family including two nieces and a nephew.  In 1971, Marian began working as a Cook for at the Red Lake Head Start and went on to accept a position as a Cook with the Red Lake IHS hospital retiring after 20 years of service.  Due to a stroke in 2003, Marian became disabled and was being cared for at home by her two granddaughters, Lanae and Ashley, as her personal care assistants along with her two daughters and other family members helping with personal cares.

Marian loved to read books, do word finds, puzzles, watch baseball and classic sitcoms and movies. She enjoyed riding around the reservation, watching powwow’s and traveling with her family.  In her younger years, she loved to attend local barn dances.  She also worked as a nanny in the Minneapolis area while her father drove a semi-truck and would drop her off and pick her up during his routes.  She was a devote Catholic and attended church service regularly.

 Marian is survived by sister, Joan Cobenais; two daughters, Wilma (Tony) Roy-Mondragon and Mary Ann (Richard) Cook; two sons, James (Kay) Roy and William Roy Jr.; five grandsons, Lydell Feather, Roland Jesse Roy, Joseph Anderson, Stan Cook and Robin Roy; nine granddaughters, Michelle Corneliusen, Billie Jean Roy, Dawn & Lilah Sayers, Lanae & Ashley Cook, Randi, Misty & Ahn’Draya Roy; sister in law, Gloria Cobenais; brother in laws, Frank and Lloyd Donnell; several great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Marian joined her parents, ex-husband and friend, William Roy Sr.; eight brothers, three sisters, her son, Roland Roy; daughter in law, Kelly Roy; grandson, Brian Roy; two nieces and a nephew that she helped raise, Lora (Desjarlait) Hawkins, Rose Desjarlait, and Douglas Desjarlait.

Wake services for Marian will begin at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 31st and continue until her 11:00 a.m. funeral service on Monday, September 2nd, 2019 all to be held at the Red Lake Community Center in Red Lake, MN.  Father Jerry Rogers will officiate.  Pallbearers for Marian will be her grandsons; Lydell Feather, Roland Jesse Roy, Joseph Anderson, Stan Cook, and Robin Roy and her nephews; Myron Cobenais, Mike Cobenais, Gary Cobenais, David Cobenais, John Cobenais, Marty Cobenais, Ronald Cobenais, Sr., TJ Cobenais, Leonard Spears Jr., Curtis Desjarlait, and Mike Kingbird.  Her honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters; Michelle Corneliusen, Billie Jean Roy, Dawn Sayers, Lilah Sayers, Lanae Cook, Ashley Cook, Randi Roy, Misty Roy, Ahn’Draya Roy, and her nieces; Shelly Cobenais, Kathy Cobenais, Sandy Cobenais, Jill Cobenais, Tammy Cobenais, Karen Cobenais, Dawn Barrett, JoAnn Anderson, Margaret Register, Roselee Desjarlait, Touresa Hickman, Crystal Hickman Frye, Jan Parkhurst, Cheryl Schoenborn and Leah Loud.  Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at Red Lake, MN.
