Albert Westlund Obituary

Albert John Westlund, 88, of Cass Lake, MN passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

John was the first son, and fourth child born to Mabel (Sather) and Albert Westlund on March 23,1934 in Cass Lake, MN. He attended school in Cass Lake and joined the Army in 1957 where he was stationed at Dugway Proving Ground near Tooele, Utah. There he met and married Virginia Lee Hasson on January 31, 1958. They had three children together and later divorced. After being discharged from active duty in the Army, he worked for Kennecott Copper Mine and would travel back to Minnesota to visit family and work for the US. Forest Service during down times at the mine.

He married the Love of his Life Catherine Elaine Johnson on April 28, 1969, in Las Vegas, NV. They made their home in Salt Lake City, UT and had one son before moving back to Cass Lake in 1973 where two more sons joined their family.

After moving back to Minnesota, He worked as a service repairman for Sears until 1980 and then for Northwood Panel Board until his retirement in 1999.

In his free time, John enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father, brothers and later his children and grandchildren. John especially loved ice fishing/spearing during the long Minnesota winters and the Minnesota Vikings.

He is survived by his children, Ginger Westlund, Wes (Kareina) Westlund, Penny Simmons, John (Lisa) Westlund, Craig (Jessica) Westlund, and Jason (April) Westlund; grandchildren, April (Dell) Steed, Cicely (Mike) Miller, Amanda (Adam) Arvay, Bryce (Makell) Westlund, Bronson (Trevor) Westlund, Natalie Westlund, Jess Simmons, Christopher Westlund, Katelyn (Jackson) Lindsey, Valerie (Ben) Porter, Elizabeth Westlund, Matthew Westlund, Nathan, Westlund, Johanna Westlund, and Ethan Westlund; brother Cliff (Betty) Westlund; sister Nancy Foster, and many great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Dorothy Allen, Ethel Theis, Shirley Karels; brother Robert Westlund; son-in-law Chad Simmons; and grandson Ben Jones.
