Bernice “Bunny” Julia New, age 84, journeyed to the spirit world on Thursday, December 30, 2021, from Redeemer Healthcare Center in Minneapolis, MN. She was born January 2, 1937, in Cass Lake, MN the daughter of Isabelle (Aitkin) and John Monroe, Sr.
Bunny grew up in the Onigum area and moved to Chicago, IL in 1959, where her younger sister came to live with her. She met Jack New, and they moved to California in 1965, where they would be married, before returning to Chicago in 1969. Bunny was a wonderful mother, great grandmother and an amazing big sister. She loved to travel, especially going to the casino or to Bingo with her late friend, Edith, she would also take the bus to the casino by herself. She was a fearless, and brave woman. She enjoyed going to powwows, yet she loved the city life. She was a very good cook and shared her recipe for Kool-Aid with many of her family members who still are using it today. Bunny enjoyed time spent with family and friends, and yet she enjoyed her peace and quiet being by herself.
Those Bunny will join in the spirit world are her husband, Jack New; parents, Isabelle and John Monroe, Sr.; sisters, Adeline Pell Monroe, Tonya, and Norma Monroe; brothers, Harold, Clyde and Calvin Monroe; daughter, Sandra New; grandson, Winter Barker; and close friend, Edith Jackson.
Those left to cherish the memory of Bunny are her daughters, Patricia (Rodney) Nelson of Apple Valley, MN, and Laura New of Grand Rapids, MN; son, Robert Blaski; brothers, Roger Monroe of Remer, MN, Edwin Monroe of Walker, MN; sisters, Evelyn Monroe of Onigum, Darlene Monroe of Walker, and Elaine (Sam) Saccoman of Bemidji, MN; grandchildren, Brendon, Brian, Nicolle, Riley, and Taylor; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A two-night wake for Bunny will begin on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at 7:00 p.m. and continue until her Saturday, January 8, 2022, 11:00 a.m. service all to be held at the Onigum Community Center in Onigum, MN. Father William Butcher will be officiating. Those helping to lay Bunny to rest will be Brendon Barker, Brian Barker, Larry Johnson, Jr., Rodney Nelson, Jason Silcox, Darrell “Deano” Jackson, Jr., and Jonathan Barker. Honorary pallbearers are all her family and friends. Interment will follow her Saturday service and be in St. John’s Episcopal Cemetery in Onigum, MN.
