Carol Ann English-Hunt, “Noodinikwe” meaning “Wind Woman”, age 76, of the Turtle Clan and Red Lake, MN, journeyed to the spirit world on Sunday, August 6, 2023, from Red Lake IHS. She was born in Red Lake on September 18, 1946, the daughter of Phyllis (Holthusen) and Allen F. English, Sr.
Carol grew up and graduated from Red Lake High School. She bowled for over 30 years in bowling leagues in Bemidji, MN and Minneapolis, MN. Carol loved her family and was a fierce protector of her entire family. She enjoyed going to garage sales, she was a great negotiator, attending pow wows, playing keno, slots, and bingo at the casino. Carol loved to travel and read. She was a reliable, hardworking, helpful, compassionate woman, who was an excellent listener. Carol loved family cookouts and was known to bring her mashed potatoes. She enjoyed many different foods, tuna salad, and Mexican dishes were amongst her favorites. Carol liked to watch her soaps, ‘The Young & the Restless’ and ‘The Bold & the Beautiful’ on television and would give you the weekly updates. Carol worked for Bemidji City Hall, Fort Totten Tribal Courts in Totten, ND before returning to MN, where she worked her last 20 years at the Hennepin County Government Center in the accounting department. She worked various other jobs throughout her life also. Carol will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Those Carol is reunited with are her dad, Allen “Bange” English, Sr.; mom, Phyllis Sumner; sons, Donald and Rodney Cobenais; brothers, Dale and Allen English, Jr., Kevin, Joey, and Gary Sumner, and Darrell Sigana; sister, Connie Sumner; great-grandsons, Kory Lussier, Jr., Chase Desjarlait; grandparents, George and Liz English, Reinhard and Tillie Holthusen; special brother, Lee English; and special sister, Sandra McKee.
Those Carol leaves behind to forever cherish her memory are daughter, Tammy (Chris) Cobenais of Red Lake; son, Ronald Cobenais of Red Lake; sisters, Rosie Barrett, Delores English, Lisa Sumner all from Red Lake; aunts, Marian Lussier, Blanche Heilig, Audrey Johnson, Shirley Ferrell, Lorraine Chaboyea, Donna Brun; uncle, Delwyn “Sonny” Holthusen; 2 special grandsons, Joseph “Joejoe” Cobenais, Jr. and Michael Desjarlait; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
A two-night wake for Carol will begin on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. and continue until her service on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., all to be held at the Old Little Rock Center in Red Lake, MN. Father George Ross will officiate. Those helping to lay Carol to rest are Delwyn English, Nick English, Stash Hanks, Josh Jones, Ron Cobenais, Jr., Mike May, Rod Cobenais, Sr., T.J. Cobenais, Allen English, Sr., Leonard Spears, Jr., Chris Schoenborn, and Wallace Holstein. Honorary pallbearers are Brenda Lussier, Tina English, Tasha Hanks, Shirley Cain, Dawn Barrett, Doug English, Jeanne Pierce, AnnMarie English-DeFoe, April Barrett, Joan Cobenais, Holly English, and Lea Lajeunesse. Interment will follow in Saint John’s Episcopal Cemetery in Red Lake, MN.
