Curtis John Buckanaga , 45, “Ozaawaanakwad” which means “Yellow Cloud” of the Sturgeon clan, began his journey from his home in Bemidji, MN. On January 8,21025. He was born to Carol (White) and Charles Buckanaga on September 14, 1979, in Cass Lake MN.
Curtis grew up in Bemidji, MN. and attended the Bug-O-Ne-Ge-Shig school.
Curtis was a gifted award-winning artist, and writer, he wrote one book, that was very well received. He is a very active activist for the Native community, it was a huge passion of his. He was a huge family man, taking great pride in raising his children. He was known as an entrepreneur.
Those greeting Curtis in the spirit world are his dad; Charles Buckanaga, daughters; Cedar, and Hazel Buckanaga, grandpa; John White, many aunts and uncles.
Those he leaves behind to cherish his memory are mother; Carol White, sons; Giniw Buckanaga, Curtis Buckanaga Jr, and Ezashowe Buckanaga, daughters; Charli Jane Buckanaga, Oginii Joseph, Miskwaanakwadook Buckanaga, and Mawandoo binesiik Buckanaga, brother; Sam Sargent, sisters; Cara (Bruce) Dahl, Jane Buckanaga, and Nicole Wadena, grandson; Carlos Zamora Jr. and the mothers of his children; Jenny Joesph, and Nicole Buckanaga.
An overnight wake for Curtis will begin at 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Veterans Memorial Building in Cass Lake, Mn. and continue until 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2025, for a traditional service. His Spiritual Advisor will be Allen Hardy. Those helping to lay Curtis to rest are, Giniw Buckanaga, Curtis Buckanaga Jr., Carlos Zamora Sr., Triston Johnson, Draye Sargent, Nick Strong, Tony Zamora and Jamison King. His honorary pallbearers are all those who knew and loved him. Curtis’s interment will be immediately following his service at Lake View Cemetery, Bena, MN.
