David "Dave" Francis Smith II

David “Dave” Francis Smith II, age 36, “Miskowananiisi” meaning “Red Tail Hawk” of the Ma’iingan Clan and Cass Lake, MN, journeyed to the spirit world on Saturday, August 19, 2023, unexpectedly. Dave was born on August 20, 1986, in Bemidji, MN, the son of Priscilla (Thompson) and David Francis Smith.

Dave grew up in the Old Agency and Onigum areas and liked playing Stars Wars with his cousins. He loved being outdoors, fishing, and wearing one of his many hats. Dave had a great sense of humor, any room he entered was sure to not be silent. He was an awesome loving dad, who did everything for his wife and kids. He was a hard worker, enjoyed pow wows, and teaching his kids the traditional ways, recently he taught his boys how to filet fish. Dave loved his food, eating and cooking. His favorite meal was spaghetti, or as Dave said, “Sghetti”. Dave enjoyed family get togethers, he was the life of the party and kept all entertained and laughing. Dave also enjoyed football, wrestling, ricing and loved and fought in MMA. Dave will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.

Those greeting Dave in the spirit world are his dad, David Francis Smith; grandparents, Robert and Frances, Harold and Hope; aunties, Valerie, Wendy, Frieda; uncles, Bart and John; close cousins, LeRoy and James; niece, Dominique; nephews, Alonzo and Damin; great-nephew, Watson; close friend, Jeremy Flackus; and numerous other friends and family members.

Those Dave leaves behind to forever cherish his memory are his wife, Natasha; mom, Priscilla; sons, Michael, Markis, Kaius, Kylo, David III, Deacon; daughters, Kaleena and Kareena; brothers, Jeremiah, Conrad, Eric; sisters, Emmilee, Lynzie, TahSheena, Kateri, Brianne; numerous friends and family.

A two-day wake for Dave will begin on Friday, August 25, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. and continue until his Sunday, August 27, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. service, all to be held at the Onigum Community Center in Onigum, MN. Dave’s Spiritual Advisor is Allen Hardy. Those helping to lay Dave to rest are Conrad Smith, Jeremiah Smith, Angelo Smith, Malakai Smith, Kenneth Smith, Jr., Robert ThunderHawk, Cody Parks, and Donald Geving. Honorary pallbearers are all Dave’s nieces, nephews, aunties, uncles, Leech Lake Housing Crew, Northern Lights Casino Custodial/Grounds Crew, and TERO Crew. Interment will be at a later date in the Old Agency Catholic Cemetery in Onigum, MN.
