Eugene "Gene" Rock Obituary

Eugene “Gene” Burton Rock, known lovingly as "Ace," passed away on December 28, 2024, at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Born on December 23, 1949, in Cass Lake, Minnesota, as the seventh of nine children, Gene spent the final years of his life living in Hastings, Minnesota, where he made a lasting impact on his community and family as the proud father of three children.

Gene was a Vietnam veteran, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division with the rank of Sergeant First Class, where he demonstrated unparalleled courage and commitment to his country. After his military service, he dedicated much of his career to the electrical trade, specializing in the installation and repair of elevators and escalators. His technical expertise and strong work ethic left a mark on many projects and colleagues.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Gene’s passion for Minnesota athletics was evident. From his early days in Cass Lake basketball to his love for college and professional sports, he found joy in the camaraderie and competition of the game. In his later years, Gene took great pleasure in attending live events, savoring every moment as a loyal fan.

Gene’s athletic pursuits didn’t stop at spectating. In his younger years, he was an avid golfer and racquetball player, participating in numerous community events and tournaments. His competitive spirit and love for the game earned him friends and memories that lasted a lifetime.

Beyond sports, Gene found excitement and relaxation in gaming, appreciating the thrill and chance of the experience.

A man of deep and diverse beliefs, Gene embraced a blend of cultural identities and faiths, including traditional Indigenous teachings, Christianity, and the Bahá’í Faith. His spirituality reflected his open heart and optimistic outlook on life.

Gene’s unwavering optimism was a hallmark of his character. He believed in the power of redemption, the promise of better tomorrows, and the importance of faith. His hopeful perspective inspired all who knew him to strive for a brighter future.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Oliver "Buster" and Cecilia Mary Rock, as well as his siblings, Rowena "Pat," Thomas "Tom," Juanita "Retz," and Wilbur "Pud," and his cherished pet, Chief.

Gene is survived by his children, Jared, Stanley, and Juanita; the mother of his children, Debra Rock; grandchild, Wesley Eugene Rock; siblings, Gerald "Oats," Elsie, Valerie “Val”, and Virginia "Ginger"; and his beloved pet, Lady Dog.
