John Waldemar Honer, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids, MN. He was born on October 12, 1943, in St. Cloud, MN, the son of Dorothy (Potthoff) and Waldemar Honer.
John was loved dearly by everyone who got to know him. He loved fishing and hunting with his children, grandchildren, and friends and he enjoyed turtling too. John was a dedicated deer hunter, never missing a season until November 2023, when he was no longer strong enough to hold his rifle. Some would say John was a bit of a joker and others might say he was honest and blunt. He was a hard-working man, from doing chores on the farm to owning and operating his own businesses. He owned Honer Homes, a construction company averaging 42 new builds a year. In 1980, he started John’s Backhoe Service, which he proudly sold to his sons in 1996, when he finally retired. John never missed an opportunity to put the entire family to work splitting firewood when they were all together for the holidays. Even though he was satisfied with their effort, John was never satisfied with the holiday dinner, they sat down to enjoy together.
John is preceded in death by his parent, Dorothy and Waldemar Honer; and brothers, Wayne and William Honer.
Those is survived by his loving wife, Judy Honer; sons, Kurt (Mary) and Cory (Kim) Honer; brothers, Randy (Cheryl), Lance (Val), and Fred (Jeanne) Honer; sisters, Shelley (Tom) Carlson, Pam (Dan) Eller; 4 grandchildren, Lexi (Andy) Hadrava, Kalin (Krista) Honer, Aaron (Karly) Himmelright, Ryan Himmelright; great-grandchildren, Avery Hadrava, Justin and Zack Honer, Korbin Himmelright and number 5 on the way.
A Celebration of Life for John will be held on Saturday, January 6th, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Lakeport Fire Hall/Town Hall in Laporte, MN. Inurnment will be in St. Theodore’s Catholic Cemetery in Laporte, MN at a later date.
