Joseph “Skip” Remitz peacefully passed away August 27, 2023, at his home on Leech Lake surrounded by friends, family, and his cats. Skip was born October 17, 1950, to Joe and Mildred Remitz in St. Paul, MN. The family resided in St. Paul until moving to Forest Lake, MN in 1958.
Skip attended St. Peter Catholic School through middle school and graduated from Forest Lake High School. In school, Skip was active in athletics and music. He and friends had a band where Skip was a drummer, and he played on the school’s baseball team. He was an avid outdoorsman his entire life and was active in Boy Scouts
In 1982, Skip met his wife, Colleen. Together they raised their children, Joseph and Rachel. He worked at Sylvester’s Lumber in Forest Lake for many years until 2002 when they made the move up north to Cass Lake, MN. They made their home on Leech Lake and Skip loved his surroundings on the lake in the Chippewa National Forest. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and trapping. Skip spent the remainder of his working years as a custodian at Cass Lake-Bena High School until his retirement in 2015. He was well known throughout the small community and was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors.
Skip was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mildred; and son-in-law, Caleb Jacobson.
Skip is missed by his wife, Colleen; children, Joseph (Sheena) and Rachel Remitz; brothers, Steve (Judy), Dan, Mike, Pat, Chris (Barb), and Duke Remitz; sisters, Rita (Charlie) Flory and Colleen (Mike) Grant; grandchildren, Avery and Dane Remitz and Bryce and Ryker Jacobson; and his beloved cats, Zoey and Ollie.
