Obituary

MaLeigha Verna Mae Barron, “Waa bishki binesi ikwe” meaning” White Thunderbird Woman”, age 20, of the Bear Clan and Red Lake, MN, unexpectedly passed away Friday, April 14th, 2023, in Apple Valley, MN. She was born on August 9, 2002, in Fargo, ND, the daughter of Mikalanna Barrett and Filevritto Barron, Jr.

MaLeigha grew up and attended school in Red Lake. MaLeigha was always happy, she’d light up any room she entered. She enjoyed joking and laughing. MaLeigha was the baby in the family, and she was not afraid to use that to her advantage. She always kept her nails done, makeup was perfect, and she was dressed to impress. MaLeigha was all about family time, her family were her friends, and her children were her world. She liked writing poetry, drawing, going for walks, and being outside. MaLeigha loved to travel and preferred to go alone. She liked to cook, potatoes and eggs was one of her favorite meals.

MaLeigha is preceded in death by her son, Alandre Tahawah; grandparents, Filevritto Verto Barron, Sr., Gerald Butch Brun, Verna Mae Barron, Delores and Jim Lesley, Ramona and Robert Barrett; uncles, Shannon Barron, Earl Morgan, Vincent Smith, Melvin “Manny” Morgan; aunt, Erin Thompson; infant sibling, Journey May; and great-grandpa, Edward J. Morgan.

Those left behind to forever cherish MaLeigha’s loving memory are her daughters, Alani and Rayceine Tahawah; mom, Mikalanna (Michael) Barrett; dad, Filevritto Verto (Darcell) Barron, Jr.; significant other, Patrick Tahawah; brothers, Filevritto Verto (Lexi) Barron III, Michael May, Jr.; sisters, Mii Kawaadizi May, LeighAnna May, Claudette (Dwight) Stately, Shirrell (Gary) Barron, Sunni Barron, Felicia (Christina) Barron; grandpas, Wayne Thompson and Michael Barrett, Sr.; grandmas, Luella Rose Morgan and Senora Thompson; aunts, LeighChelle Barrett, Alverda “Babe” Strong, Holly Smith; uncle, Mekko “Unki” (Jamie) Thompson; numerous other family members and friends.

An overnight wake for MaLeigha will begin on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. and continue until her Friday, April 21, 2023, 1:00 p.m. service, all to be held at the New Red Lake Community Center in Red Lake. Father George Ross will officiate. Traditional music will be played by The Young Kingbird Drum Group. Those helping to lay MaLeigha to rest are Luckas Rudolph, Logan Rudolph, Jamie Green, Jr., J.T. Seaton, Dave May II, Michael May, Sr., Mekko Thompson, and Gerald Jourdain. Honorary pallbearers are all MaLeigha’s 8 siblings, Phoenix Barnaby, Maiigan Thompson, Teasha Stately, Shanayla Wind, Kyra King, Ree Stately, Arrianna Tahawah, and Patrick Tahawah. Interment will be in the Lesley Family Burial Grounds in Red Lake, MN following services.
