Mary Cross Goggleye Obituary

On February 3, 2024, Mary Ann Cross Goggleye, age 88, began her journey to the spirit world. Mary Ann was born on March 13, 1935, to Lucy Goggleye and John Cross, in Onigum, MN. She was a proud citizen of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe, and was a Mississippi Band member, Marten clan, enrolled at the Leech Lake Reservation.

Mary grew-up in Oak Point on Leech Lake, and eventually moved to Minneapolis, MN. She lived there for decades until her move to Grand Forks, ND. During her time in Minneapolis, she worked in various fields taking care of people. In her free time, Mary Ann was known to laugh, tell stories, playing cribbage, bingo and visit the casino.  (Mary Ann was known to be very lucky in money!) Mary Ann loved her family and people, and loved cook for them when they would visit her home. She always welcomed anybody with open arms, and would speak “Indian” aka Ojibwe with them, her first language.

Mary Ann leaves behind her partner-Anthony Hayes, her children-Bonita Crimmins, Brenda Cross, and Sandra Mitchell. Other relatives Mary Ann is survived by are: her grandchildren-Jennifer Cross, Jessica Yellow, Crystal Swenson, and Nathanial Hayes; her great-grandchildren: Jaiden Cross, Reilly Week, Trinity Week, Owen Johnson, Cyrus Taylor, Kalvin Week, Quincy Johnson, Anthony Johnson, Peyton Jensen, Montgomery Swenson, Preston Jensen, Starrlyn Yellow, Cherish Locket, Heaven Locket, and her favorite-Mikinaak, aka Tristan Solberg. She is also leaving behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives, including but not limited to: Spenser White, John Boy Whipple, Richard Marson, Charlene Goggleye, and Connie Edberg.

Mary Ann is being welcomed in the spirit world by her daughter-Eleanor Cross, mother-Lucy Goggleye, her father-John Cross, and her siblings-Julia Cross, Raymond Cross, Doris Cross, Robert Cross, Salina Cross, and Paula Marson, her adopted sister-Josephine Dunn, nephews-Curtis Cross and Darrell Cross, maternal grandparents-Ida (King) Goggleye and Sam Goggleye, and her Paternal grandparents.

The traditional Ojibwe ceremony will begin on Thursday, February 8, 2024, at 6:00 PM at the Onigum Community Center, 8825 Onigum Road NW, Onigum, MN 56647, and the funeral will begin on Friday, February 9, 2023 at 10:00 AM, with Allen Hardy officiating.

It is Mary Ann’s wish to be cremated, and her ashes spread across her loved ones’ graves around the Leech Lake Reservation.
