Matthew "Matt"` Hunt Obituary

Matthew “Matt” Curtis Hunt, “Waawaatay” meaning “Fire Burning”, of the Bear Clan and Onigum, MN, age 72, passed away on Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND. He was born June 10, 1951, in Cass Lake, MN, the son of Phyllis Louise (Chief) and James Joseph Hunt, Sr.

Matt was wise beyond his years, knowledgeable in numerous areas, and always teaching. He was always helping people out in any way he could. He was the keeper of the “Onigum Highway”, keeping the road plowed. In his younger years, Matt played in bowling leagues and softball leagues, where he was well known for his batting. Matt was also well known in the chemical dependency treatment facilities around the state for his work as a counselor. He coached youth baseball teams in Onigum and took his team to tournaments. He loved hunting, fishing, and setting net, it kept him busy and out of trouble. Matt enjoyed playing slots early in the morning at the casino where he was a well-known “usual”.  He liked to play and talk about the weekly football boards, watch hunting shows, football, and was a Minnesota Vikings fan. He was a big fan of the Cass Lake-Bena Boys Basketball Team and travelled to most of their games to cheer them on. Matt was an independent, relentless, and good-natured teasing man. Matt was a well known and loved man who loved everyone, especially his large family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Family that Matt is reunited with are his parents, Phyllis and James Hunt, Sr.; brothers, Roland, Ronald, Ernest, Eli, Spencer, and James Hunt, Jr.; sisters, Donna, Brenda, Alice, Helen, Louella, Janice, and Peggy Hunt, and Judy Littlewolf; daughter, Michelle Hunt; son, Michael Fox; nieces, Lisa Dakota and Nettla Hunt; nephews, Russell Tucker, Richard “Dicky Doo” Littlewolf, Jr., Roland Hunt, Jr., and Duane Hanks, Jr.

Those Matt leaves behind to forever cherish his loving memory are his life partner, Ruth Wright; sons, Eric (Emily) Alger, Paul (Leila) Jourdain, Tim St. Clair; brother, Melvin (Joy) Hunt; special nieces, Cindy Jackson-Kingbird and Brenda Bedausky Best; special nephew, Rome Bedausky; grandchildren, Camryn, Cordell, and Casey Hunt, Veronica and Jeremee St. Clair, Brenda, Osmond, and Owen Hunt, Donald  “Willy” Headbird, Jr., Felix Webster-Fox, Ty, Sydney, and Payton Alger; numerous other family members and friends.

An overnight wake for Matt will begin on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. at the Onigum Community Center and will continue until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, December 28, 2023, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Onigum. Reverend William “Bill” Butcher will officiate. Those helping to lay Matt to rest are Eric Alger, Ed St. John, Gary Johnson, Lee Turney, Paul Jourdain, Joe Wright, and alternate Dennis Smith, Sr. Honorary pallbearers are Todd Wilson, Mel Hunt, Faron Jackson, Don Wright, Jr., Dorothea Cloud, Dedric Jackson, Kingsly Whitebird, Gabriel Kingbird, TrayVaughn Lee, and Kaydin Lee. Interment will follow services in the St. John’s Episcopal Cemetery in Onigum, MN.
