Michael Olson Obituary

Mike Olson, 62, died peacefully in his sleep on January 17, 2024, at his home in Onigum, Minnesota.  He is survived by his wife Paula (Haugen) Olson, his daughter Kristen Velasco, grandchildren Emily, Alejandra, Madison, MacKenzie, and his son Freedom Olson; stepchildren Josh Strobel (Jeannie), Jordan Strobel (Tara) and Jonathan Strobel, grandchildren Lance and Vera.   His mother Gloria (Aamodt) Adkisson, sisters Sharon Fox (Donald), Patrice Welsh, nieces Ursula, Nicole, nephews Daniel and Caske.    Preceded in death his father Russell Olson.
Mike was a beacon of light and positivity, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. A devoted and loving husband, he cherished his role as a father to his children and grandchildren. He held his friends, especially his childhood friends—close to his heart, staying connected with them throughout the years and sharing countless great stories from their adventures together. Mike had a deep love for classic rock and roll, proudly playing his cherished records on his beloved stereo. A nostalgic soul, he found joy in the memories and moments that shaped his life.
Mike faced many challenges throughout his life, but he overcame them with resilience and transformed them into positivity. At the age of 40, he made the inspiring decision to return to school, earning his BA in social work. This achievement allowed him to make a meaningful difference in the lives of many troubled youth over the years. Despite his serious commitment to helping others, Mike always maintained his fun and playful spirit. With his sharp wit and knack for being a jokester, he brought smiles and laughter to everyone around him.
Mike, who was adopted as a baby, found his biological family 20 years ago.  He was very happy to find his family and know his history.  He became a proud member of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe at that time.    In 2017, he moved to Onigum and made it his home, purchasing a cabin on the shores of Leech Lake. As an integral part of this community, Mike embodied a spirit of generosity and connection.   Whether he was sharing venison or fish with elders or offering a helping hand wherever it was needed, Mike’s presence made a difference. Onigum was more than just a place to him—it was home, a blessing he cherished, and a community he was honored to be part of.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Onigum Community Center from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
A Military Honor Service will be held in the spring at Fort Snelling and an official notice will be forthcoming.   Michael proudly served his country from 1979-1986
