Nancy Jacobson Obituary

Nancy Elizabeth (Anderson) Jacobson, age 93, passed away on Monday, November 27, 2023, from her home at May Creek Cottages in Walker, MN. She born to Ernest and Elizabeth (McKay) Anderson on June 30, 1930, in Pittsburg, Kansas. On June 14, 1936, Nancy was joined by her sister, Carolyn.

Nancy was very active in school and played the violin.  After graduation from high school, she attended college, to follow in her parents' footsteps to become a teacher.

After she graduated from college she accepted a position in Hutchinson, Kansas teaching third grade for almost two years.  In October 1953, she met a “handsome” young man from Walker, Minnesota on a blind date in Hutchinson.  In December, during Christmas break, this handsome young man, Don Jacobson, took her to Walker to meet his family.  They went for a ride to Itasca State Park, where he proposed.  They married on March 20, 1954, and moved to Walker.  Nancy spent time helping Don and his dad, Carl, build their home.  She and Don lived there until he died in 2002, and she continued to live there until moving to May Creek Memory Care in 2022.

Nancy substituted at Walker Elementary and tutored students at Ah-Gwah-Ching.  In I957 she accepted a position with the Walker School District teaching 4th grade.  In March 1961 she and Don adopted their son Danny.  She stayed home raising Danny and then in December 1963, they adopted their son Gary.  In 1968, Nancy returned to the classroom teaching 5th grade until retiring in 1990.

Nancy and Don loved to travel and from the late 1980’s they traveled each summer all over the United States.  She would plan all the stops they would make, what they would see, and kept meticulous notes in notebooks about their trips. One of her favorite trips was to Alaska when they traveled with Martha and Harry Winter.  In the mid 90’s she and Don started wintering in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.  She continued to do that through 2018.  She drove herself down every October and home in April/May.

Nancy and Don were valued members of the Community Church of Walker where Nancy taught Sunday School when her sons were young, and she sang in the choir for decades.  She was very involved with the Women’s Circle and other committees.

Nancy and Don were extremely involved in the Civil Air Patrol.  She loved everything to do with the planes and especially flying with her husband in their little plane.  When she was about to turn 50, she decided that she wanted to get her pilot’s license.  She did exceedingly well in the class setting and flying the plane.  She would tell how she loved the take off and soar through the sky, but then it was time to land, she was not a fan.  So, after she did her solo flight to achieve her goal and earn her license, she never soloed again. She continued to fly with Don and be actively involved with the Civil Air Patrol.

Nancy was also very involved with the local P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization). She became a member in 1957. During the sixty-six years she was an active member of Chapter CY in Walker and was dedicated to the ideals of sisterhood: helping women complete their education.  Nancy worked tirelessly to promote these goals.  She also opened her home, often for the purposes of holding CY chapter meetings and luncheons.  She was very proud of her service and involvement with the organization.

Nancy was an avid reader and one of her passions was the Walker Library.  She was on the Board for many years and was quite dedicated to promoting the importance of having a library in Walker.  She was excited that a new library is being built.

Nancy is survived by her daughter-in-law, Gay Jacobson, Walker; grandsons, Joshua Miles, CO, Caleb Miles (Stephanie), TN; great-granddaughters, Micahla Miles, CO, Skylar Niemeyer (Cameron), VA; great-grandson, Jaden Miles, TN; sister, Carolyn Stewart, MO; nephews, Steven Stewart (Susan Watrous), CA, Tim Stewart, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Elizabeth Anderson; husband, Don Jacobson; sons, Danny Jacobson and Gary Jacobson.

Nancy spent the past 16 months as a resident of May Creek Memory Care in Walker.  We are eternally grateful for their care, compassion, and support of her and Gay, after Gary passed away in January.
