Richard "Dick" Kop Obituary

Richard “Dick” Joseph Kop, 84 of Walker, MN passed away on May 27, 2023. Dick was born on January 7, 1939, to Kenneth and Helen (Stokes) Kop in Minneapolis, MN.

After Dick graduated from high school in 1956, he honorably served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1958. In 1954, Dick met the love of his life, Kathleen “Katie” Mary Diethelm in Chaska, MN. He found “home” in Katie, and they married on October 12, 1957. They went on to have four girls, Michele, Denise, Cherrie, and Shawn.

His life was as full as anyone could imagine. Dick was a true independent and conducted his life and businesses always with honor and respect. He lived by a code of ethics never to be compromised and his word was his bond. His service to family and community was vast. Dick was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. Dick served for many years on the Board of Directors, holding First, Second, and Third Vice President positions, Coordinator of the NMLRA rendezvous circuit and Bushway of the Montana rendezvous. He was a member of the American Legion for 60 years in Richfield, MN and Walker, MN serving on many committees and supporting their mission. He also served for several years in the Hector, MN volunteer fire department. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and expert trap and skeet shooter. He and Katie traversed the entirety of Canada, the United States, South America, northern Europe, and Africa hunting game. He favored driven pheasant hunting in England, also wing shooting in Argentina, Ireland, Scotland, and hunting big game in Africa and Spain.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Helen Kop; and sister, Jacquelyn Tieden.

Dick is survived by wife, Katie; daughters, Michele Kop, Denise (Dave) Wolff, Cherrie (Paul) Bargman, Shawn (Dan) Halbert; grandchildren, Scott (Greta) Anderson, Tyler Anderson, Dalton (Alli) Anderson, Jed (Briana) Fluhrer, Katie (Jim) Hollis; great-grandchildren, Elin, Liam K., Aurlyn, Emersen, Meredith, Caroline, Karyn, and Liam H.

A celebration of life for Dick will be held Tuesday, June 6, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Northern Peace Funeral Home, 114 Tianna Drive, Walker, MN, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Dick’s urn bearers are his sons-in-law, Paul Bargman, Dave Wolff, and Dan Halbert. Honorary urn bearers are all of Dick’s grandchildren. Military honors accorded by the Spencer Ross Post 143 Honor Guard. A 12:30 p.m. luncheon will follow services at the American Legion Spencer Ross Post 134, 407 Front Street, Walker MN. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Legion Spencer Ross Post 134.
