Robert Wendell May, Sr.

Robert Wendell May, Sr., age 70, “Naawayiyinaabawid Miskwaganiiwizaagaaing Gighigoons” meaning “He who stands between the two lakes, Upper Red Lake and Lower Red Lake Spirit Man”, of Red Lake, Minnesota began his journey to the spirit world on Saturday, September 25th, 2022, from his home in Red Lake, MN.

Robert was born in Red Lake, MN on Thursday, November 8th, 1951, to Martha (Kelly) and Joseph May, Sr.  He grew up and attended school in Red Lake, graduating from Red Lake High School in 1969.  After graduation, he continued his education in the forestry, carpentry and electrical fields.  Robert made his home in Red Lake and worked for the Red Lake Housing Authority from 1990 to 2021.  When he wasn’t working, he loved visiting with people and spending time with his family and his grandkids.

He is welcomed to the spirit world by his parents, Martha and Joseph May, Sr.; siblings, Brenda, Miles, Reginald, Marlene, Charles and Arnold May, and many more family members.

Those left behind to cherish his memory are his children, Keith May, Sr., Jennifer May, Annie May, Janice May, Robert May, Jr., and Laura Wass; special granddaughter; Crystal May-Prentice, siblings, Joseph May, Jr. and Paula May; 26 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and his friends.

A wake for Robert will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th and continue until his 10:00 a.m. traditional service on Thursday, September 29th all to be held at the New Red Lake Community Center in Red Lake, MN.  Allen Hardy will be his Spiritual Advisor.  Helping to lay Robert to rest are Jordan May, Tyler May, Donovan May, Justice May, Sr., Christopher Day, Jr., and Vaughn Day.  Alternate pallbearers are Zackary May and Robert L. Boyd III.  His honorary pallbearers are Joseph May, Jr., Paula May, Rita Wiese, Ava May-Prentice, Edward May, Floyd “Buck” Jourdain, Jr., Robert L. May, and the Red Lake Housing Authority Staff.  Interment will be in the May Family Burial Grounds at Red Lake, MN.
