Scott "Scotty" Smiar Obituary

Scott “Scotty” William Smiar of Bemidji, MN, passed away at Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. He was born on September 10, 1985, in Bemidji, the son of Robyn (Wolf) and Paul Smiar.

Scott graduated from Bemidji High School in 2004. He worked as a pizza delivery driver and was broadsided by another vehicle while delivering pizza in rural Bemidji in June 2004. The injuries suffered by Scott because of that incident left him a quadriplegic needing care 24/7.

Scotty was a happy young man with many friends and was the student manager for the Bemidji High School Hockey Team. He was good-hearted, adventurous, and made people laugh. He enjoyed snowmobiling (wearing tennis shoes rather than boots), fishing, hunting, and eating Doritos, and he spent many hours golfing and snowboarding with his brother, Tony. He and his friend, Andy Eichstadt, owned and raced a stock car, and as an 18-year-old Scott had plans to open a car repair business with his cousin, Matt Wolf, which would finance his racing dreams. Scott’s 1996 red Ford Mustang GT was his pride and joy, and it is still parked at his residence, just as it was those many years ago.

Even though Scott was unable to walk or care for himself after the accident, his mother, stepfather, and brother made sure he lived as full a life as possible. For the last fifteen years, Scotty was lovingly cared for by his mother, stepfather, and brother in his home. Even though he endured many periods of hospitalization during the nineteen years since the accident and numerous procedures in attempts to improve his condition, he always had a smile for visitors. He enjoyed attending car races, going on pontoon rides, eating out, watching the Fourth of July fireworks, listening to music, and watching TV, especially the Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Wild, and Minnesota Vikings. He was an avid Beavers hockey fan and when health permitted, he could be found in his wheelchair at the Sanford Center cheering on his favorite team. He also loved becoming an uncle to Isabella, Sutton, and Ellie.

In addition to the many friends Scott acquired during his lifetime and other extended family members, those left behind to cherish his memory are his mother, Robyn (David) Hoem; brother, Tony Smiar; father, Paul (Ida) Smiar; nieces and nephew, Isabella, Sutton, and Ellie Smiar; uncle, Steve (Brenda) Wolf; and aunt, Susie (Art) Holt.

Although Scott will be greatly missed by family and friends, it is a comfort to know that he is finally pain free and in the hands of the Lord.

A celebration of Scott’s life will be held at a later date.
