Valerie Yvonne Johns

Valerie Yvonne Johns, 55 of Red Lake began her journey to the Spirit World on December 20, 2019 at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND with her family by her side.  She was born on February 14, 1964 in Red Lake, MN the daughter of David Skinaway, Sr. and Mary Rose (Johns) Skinaway.

Val grew up in Red Lake, MN.  She graduated from Red Lake High School in 1982.  She attended BSU for a few years and worked at the Red Lake High School.  She also worked at the Red Lake Store for a short period before working at the Red Lake Hospital as a Supply Clerk for 26 years, she retired October 2018.

Val enjoyed playing Candy Crush and lottery tickets, going to the casino and concerts, and spending time with her dogs Diamond, Hemi, Rocko, and Bullet.  She was a very giving, kind-hearted, and loving person.  She loved all the little babies in the family.

She was survived by son, Brian (Whitney) Holthusen, Jr.; husband, Brian Holthusen, Sr.; special daughter, Bryann Lussier of Red Lake; sisters, Diana (Royce) Graves of Red Lake and Judy Beier of Grand Rapids; brothers, David Skinaway, Jr. of Red Lake, Ronald (Gidget) Skinaway, Sr. of Hines, MN., Virgil (Kelly) Skinaway, Sr. of Clearbrook, MN and Quintin (Brenda) Johns of Red Lake.

She was preceded in death by parents Mary Rose (Johns) and David Skinaway, Sr.; maternal grandparents, Frank and Philomene Johns; paternal grandparents, Ed and Claire Skinaway; brothers, Lowell Skinaway and an infant brother; nephew, Scott Graves and many aunts, uncles, and other family members.

A wake will start at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2019 and continue until the funeral on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. all at the Red Lake Center with Father Jerry Rogers officiating.  Active pallbearers are Franklin Skinaway, Sr., Royce Graves, III, Virgil Skinaway, Jr., Gerald Graves, Dominic Needham, Lee Beaulieu.  Alternate pallbearers are D’Anglo Benais and Josh Gutierrez.  Her honorary pallbearers are Nicole Johns, Michelle Johns, Simone Johns, Darlene Drouillard, Shelly Chaboyea, Connie Chaboyea, Nikki Skinaway, Melody Koste, Jennifer Halverson, and Lisa Sumner.  Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery at a later date.
