William "Bill" Dale Niswonger

William “Bill” Dale Niswonger, 71, of Walker, Minnesota, passed away on September 15, 2023, after suffering from Covid pneumonia at Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji, MN. He was born on May 23, 1952, in Grafton, North Dakota. Bill was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather. Bill was lovingly called "Grandpa Bill" by Anita's family.

Bill graduated from Minto High School in Minto, ND. He then embarked on a career as a federal firefighter at the Grand Forks AFB, ND, from 1974 to 1992. Following his time as a firefighter, Bill and his family moved to Bottineau, ND, and he worked until 2007 as a U.S. Customs officer, first at the Dunseith, ND, Port of Entry, and later at the Calexico, CA, Port of Entry, while Bill and Gloria made their home in Yuma, AZ. He then retired to Walker, where he enjoyed delivering meals on wheels for several years, meeting with the retired law enforcement officers weekly for coffee, and volunteering in various capacities at Hope Lutheran Church, where he found solace and comfort, especially after his cancer diagnosis.

Bill is survived by his wife, Gloria (Skreland); sons, Chad of Walker and Scott (Anita) of Muskegon, MI; brother, Gary of Minto, ND; sisters, Mariette (Melton) Flores of Rogers, AR, and Peggy of Minto, ND; brother-in-law, Harold (Elaine) Skreland of Inver Grove Heights, MN; sisters-in-law, Anne Traxler of Plummer, MN, Marian (Don) Schiller of Grand Forks, ND, Mardell Niswonger of Minto, ND; grandchildren, Nate and Kalyn Seewald, Soley, Haley, and Logan, Heith and Amber Seewald, Oliver, Liam, Ariah, and Linus; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Isabel Niswonger; brothers, baby John and Dale Niswonger; sister, LuAnn Jacobson, and brother-in-law, Don Jacobson; mother and father-in-law, Gunsten and Alice Skreland, brothers-in-law, Bill Traxler and Walter Skreland; and sister-in-law, Martha Skreland.

A funeral service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church in Walker on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. Visitation will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the church. Pastor Matt McWaters will officiate.
